Big Bad Wolf left town

Ho ho ho ! Merry Christmas everyone.

Sorry for this long hiatus because Uni life is no joke. Not to mention Uni's line !

I guess the monstrous book sales has been a hot topic for quite some time. Everyone rushed to the wolf's den to spend till they drop. And yes, I was one of the everyone. I went there like 3 to 4 times I guess. Didn't make it on the last day though. But on the preview day itself, I already bought quite a number of books, mind you ! And the next day, where BBW is officially launched, I went there again with coursemates.

This is what welcomed us on the first day itself. If you've never been to the Big Bad Wolf book sales, don't be surprise that people actually bring luggages, big huge luggage and trolleys for a thorough book shopping spree !

The Big Bad Wolf book sale claimed the be the world's biggest book sale.

The wolf's Lamborghini !

It is a real car okay ! I think they added another blue car a few days after.

Different banners indicating different sections.

Notice how they used Harry Potter's font on Young Adult ?

And yes, guess this is one of the sales' highlights. Mission 63, where non-stop book shopping for the first 3 days, 63 hours non-stop. It's from 7 December to 23 December, they had this 63 hours mayhem every weekend after that !

Stacks and stacks of books ! Yes, STACKS of cheap books. Like Mitch Albom's For One More Day, HARDCOVER, large print edition. Malcom Gladwell's Blink and Outliers ! You can see these books in STACKS every where. Selling from 8-12 ringgit !

Fiction- my most hovered section !

Can you see the crowd ? It's just a small part of the hall !

My favourite section :D You get free stamps to stamp your purchases ! Awesome or what ? ;D

BBW merchandise.

This monstrous book sales is recommendable to all book lovers. However, do not expect newly published books to be in this sales. At least not the oven-fresh books. If you're those readers who genuinely long for new books, then this sales might disappoint you a little, you'll still be able to find some gems here and remember to bring along your patience !

The wolf has finally left town, mission accomplish. But if you're one dedicated reader, this book sales is not one to be missed next year :D

Till then,

Mich

Book Review : Fifty Shades of Grey

Yes. There, I'm announcing to the world that I've read porn, wtf. Let me explain myself later, don't jump into conclusion that I'm a girl that grows horn on my head.

I'll skip my rambles and straight to the review. Laters, baby.

The Author.

The glorious author, Erika Leonard or better known as E.L. James. A British writer that used to write fan fictions under the name; Snowqueens Icedragon. Thus, there's honestly not much to talk about the writer.

The Story.

The story revolves around the internal conflicts of Anastasia Steele, literature student, about her unusual relationship with Christian Grey, CEO of Grey Enterprise which he himself fully owns it.

It all begins with Ana's best friend, Katherine Kavanagh convinced Ana to interview Christian Grey(who happened to be a benefactor of their school)for their school's magazine since Katherine was sick. As she stumbles into Mr Grey's office, she immediately intrigued Christian Grey while she herself finds that the intimidating and mysterious yet polite and calm Christian Grey irrevocably attractive.

Upon asking awkward and pointed questions through the interview, Anastasia felt relief that she will never have to see this cold and seductive man again. However, Christian Grey unexpectedly showed up at a DIY shop where Anastasia worked as a part-timer.

Although she tries to deny that she has feelings for this strange, distant yet very seemingly attractive guy, the way she reacts about him is so obvious that she has a thing for this stranger.

Not long after she crosses his path, she finally discovers that Christian Grey is not just attractive but dangerously demanding in his own dark way. He brought her to his house in Seattle and showed her his playroom which is she later on acknowledges as the Red Room of Pain/Pleasure. Christian Grey finally confides in his dark secret.

It dawns upon Anastasia that a relationship with Christian Grey is not about hearts and flowers but something   entirely different from what she expected for her first fling. In order to be with this angelic demon, she, as the Submissive needs to obey all Christian Grey's orders as the Dominant or will face severe punishment that Christian claims will bring her more pleasure instead of just pain.

Story goes on with Anastasia debating whether she can accept what Christian's idea of pleasure and also if Christian Grey is capable of giving her more than just a Dominant/Submissive relationship.

Words of my own.

Reading this novel, there are unmistakably several points that resembles Twilight by Stephanie Meyer. Undoubtedly, even E.L. James herself admitted that Fifty Shades of Grey is a novel developed from her fan fiction of Twilight named Master of the Universe. The story settles mostly in the Seattle at Christian Grey's modernized house.

Truth be told, I did not buy this book. All I can say is that the world of internet is such a gift to mankind.

Back to the book. Something I find annoying about this book is how the narrator (this book is written from the first person of view-Anastasia Steele) is always amazed by the beauty of Christian Grey-proof that this is really a fan fic of Twilight. The way the author imitates Stephanie Meyer's way of writing and choice of words is very profound. Such as the way the heroin describes the way the hero smiles. Every page of Fifty Shades reminds me of Twilight.

Apart from similarity with Twilight, the story is quite dull as .. obviously, it practically revolves around sex. Except from the beginning, every time Christian Grey and Anastasia Steele is being put together, they are gonna have sex, no doubt. Speaking of which, the sex scenes in this book are boring. Lets put it this way; the first time a joke is told, it'll make you laugh non stop.  The same joke being told the second time, okay .. it's still funny .. slightly bored. But if it's being told over and over again .. it is meaningless, dull, repetitive and above all .. don't you have any better stuff to put in ? One word summarizes all - predictable.

The author also focus too much on her hero and heroin. It's way too much. I understand this is a nature of a book written from the first person's point of view. The readers only see what the narrator sees and know what the narrator knows. But there are several other characters as well but it's all too brief. Just touch and go.

However, something good is that despite the author focuses her attentions on sex scenes more than anything else, she still manage to instil some romantic features every now and then. Romantic in my point of views. Such as the part where Christian Grey burst into Anastasia's room while she was crying. And also showing up surprisingly in front of Anastasia when she was on a trip visiting her mom to spend time away from him. Just a little bit of romance every now and then.

I don't want to rate this book. All I can say is that I'm impressed that it has sold so many millions of copies. It's basically a porn version of Twilight, without the involvements of sparkling vampires and sexy werewolves. Ironically, the hero still manage to smile crooked smiles and be dangerous yet beautiful to not only the heroin but also .. incidentally a restaurant waitress.

Note to parents, don't buy it for your child. It's not just a chic-lit. Like how everyone else on the internet is saying, it's a book for mamas !

Like I said, allow me to explain. I've always wanted to blog something yet, I just don't feel like blogging about my life. Not in the mood. And I happened to just technically finish this book so .. I found something to blog about. I debated whether should I really publicly do a review about this book. It's like-like I've mentioned earlier-telling to everyone that reads my blog that I've just recently finish reading a porn book and now I wanna criticize how not arousing it is. But then again, I'm like, screw that shit. It's my blog.

One thing I'm sure, I'm definitely not gonna read the sequel. Bet I'll narrow my eyes if I see anyone reading or buy this book. Mean and bitchy much ? No, we aimed to please ;)

Have a sweet dream,

Mich, without the 'ie'

of books and books

This is, well, hopefully a short and brief update given that I don't babble too much. I don't know if you've ever heard about it, but obviously you have .. okay, to the point, the book fest at KLCC Convention Hall ! I'm so going tomorrow and hopefully everything goes alright, I'll be there tomorrow ! Come stalk me. Kidding. There are certain books that I want to buy ...

Have a little faith by Mitch Albom. I already bought the other three books and this is the only one that I haven't got yet ! But it's a bit religious for my liking base on the brief intro at the back of the book but still, Mitch Albom's is not those kind of author that you can say no to without regretting it.

The Almost Moon by Alice Sebold. The Lovely Bones was awesome and I've read a few page of this book at the bookstore. But the condition of the book in that particular bookstore is such a big turn off !

Her Fearful Symmetry by Audrey Niffenegger. I've read The Time Traveler's Wife for more than once already and it's really a page turner. I'm having high expectation from this book by the very same author. There were excerpts of this book at the end of TTTW !

Battle Hymn of the Tiger Mother by Amy Chua. Honestly, i don't really know this author. Probably the first Chinese author's english book that I've ever wanted. But it seems rather interesting after hearing my friend who read the excerpt of this book from RD telling me about it. I saw it at Popular yesterday, but, it's those hard cover type which is freaking expensive. I'm a book freak, yes, but I don't go for hard covers like .. d-uhhh ?

Something Borrowed by Emily Giffin. Chick lit. Yes, if you're a loyal stalker reader of my blog, you might roughly remember that I've once said I'm way pass the age for chick lits. But the thing is, well, when my sister was busy shopping for sun block and money changing .. I spent my time un-wastingly at Popular and I happened to be reading this book. Well, it was rather captivating but i had to leave without buying it because *shrugs* the condition of the book turned me off.

Jane Eyre by Charlotte Bronte. Classic. Not much i can babble about. I didn't manage to buy it last year, so yeahhh 8D

This update ended up quite long. Whoops, sorry for that. But yeah ! I'm so gonna shop for books tomorrow but there are several problems being thrown in my way such as ..

Not enough cash.
I'm about to shift.
Books I've bought last year from the very same fest is only 40% if not 30% read. The list can be viewed here.
I've got Trials coming up pretty SOON.
Like always, my mom is gonna kill me.

It's sad, so sad .. it's a sad sad situation .. OTL Well, maybe I'll just buy one book, okay .. maybe two .. well, alright .. maybe three if i can manage to convince my bestie to let me do so .. I guess four won't hurt ? Well .. five ? Arghhhh !!! I'll have to ask my mom to borrow me some che ching che chings ! LOL

Anyways, if you've missed my birthday, you know what to do ehhh (pick any of the above listed books >8D ) lol lol lol ..

Right, it's a study night .. sigh. Honestly, I'd rather bury myself reading books than study. Who wouldn't ???

Till then(which might be really soon) !

Love,

Mich

Book Review: The Lovely Bones, Alice Sebold

I've just finished reading this book and decided to review it. Well, this is the very first "formal" review I ever made. So...mistakes are inevitable.

-About the author-
Alice Sebold was born in Madison Winconsin and grew up in the suburbs of Philadelphia and

Me and my books..xD

I don't have pics but i embedded short clips from To Kill a Mockingbird film adaptation:

Okay, it was 11 something when I drafted this post on my notebook. Pretty blur cause’ headache-ing too..>.<! Okay, I’m this type of human where when the feeling’s here, I just have to jot it down or it will probably slip away with sleeping.

Hehe, I was reading To Kill a Mockingbird. I’m about to finish it. 10 pages or maybe less than that left. Yeah, reading in a slow pace. What else can I do when there are all these distractions like facebook, plurk and etc. Well, it’s a nice book. Good reading piece. I remember asking my friend why is the title To Kill a Mockingbird? Why mockingbird. Now I know, mockingbird symbolizes innocence. Atticus said, no matter how noble a man is, but if he took advantage of the ignorant, he’s nothing but trash. This book, it puts you in the perspectives of an innocent girl about Americans and the colored folks back in 1936 if I’m not mistaken.

Some people might think: Michelle, why are you reading all these now? Should have read it earlier! But to me, this is exactly about the right time for me to go through these entire genres. I mean I’m 18. The age where I’m turning from a silly, stupid girl to a girl with brains. LOL. I guess I no longer read to bring myself into a world full of fantasies away from realities. I’m now looking for books that will make me think I guess. But come to think of it, if Jane Austen’s books happen to be published now, wouldn’t it be categorize as chicklits? xD I guess I’ve passed those times where I’m after fantasies and fang-tastics. Hehe. My next target will be Mitch Albom since Nandy refused to lend me hers. But he will have to wait until I finish my Jane Austen. A long way to go… I realize, the way you look at books changes as you grow. I probably might end up boxing To Kill a Mockingbird away if I happen to read it a few years back. So, I came to the conclusion that, maybe the House of Night series aren’t that bad after all. Hehe. Maybe one day, one day I might just pick up Narnia from the book rack and end up liking it. But for the time being, I still think the movie’s better. LOL. I don’t know. My sister told me that Narnia was written base on the Bible. So maybe a few years later, I might be able to take it in maturely. I might also be able to link “the air is delicious” with Christianity too. Just kidding. No offence intended. Ohh crap! I seriously hope Jodi Picoult would stop writing. I really don’t know how long it is until I get back to her. Imagine the amount of book she has written until I get back to her…! Nicholas Spark, I’ll just get it from Nandy. Hehe….

I reckon she must be complaining that I’m not lending her my books while I still expect her to lend me hers. I think this habit won’t change for a long time. She knows best about me and my books. Better take my pacemaker out of me than getting me to lend you my books, right Nandy? Sam would laugh at this!

P/s: My phone's still not home yet..no pics..T.T
